Inland Revenue and Australian Taxation Office information exchange

10 November 2016.

Inland Revenue can now request and receive information about student loan borrowers based in Australia.

An information exchange with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will enable Inland Revenue to contact borrowers; keeping them up to date with changes to the student loan scheme and potentially recover outstanding loan repayments from them.

Around 73% of overseas-based borrowers are in default with their loans and the majority of these overseas-based borrowers are believed to be living in Australia. Obtaining accurate contact details is crucial in making sure that overseas-based borrowers comply with their obligations.

All borrowers living or planning to go overseas, for more than six months, are encouraged to make sure that Inland Revenue has their up to date contact information and to contact Inland Revenue if they need to arrange repayment of their loans.

To stay on track and actively manage their student loan accounts, borrowers can log on or register with myIR secure online services at www.ird.govt.nz
