Student Allowance residency changes

2011

The exemption to the two-year stand-down was extended to people who are sponsored into New Zealand by a family member who was granted residence on the basis of their refugee status.

2012

The exemption to the two-year stand-down for new permanent residents was extended to sponsored family members of ‘protected persons’ (under the Immigration Act 2009).

2014

The stand-down period for permanent residents and Australian citizens will be extended to three years.

Student Loan residency changes

2011

The two-year stand-down period for Australian citizens and New Zealand permanent residents was applied to Student Loans. An exemption was made available to people who are sponsored into New Zealand by a family member who was granted residence on the basis of their refugee status.

2012

The exemption to the two-year stand-down for new permanent residents was extended to sponsored family members of ‘protected persons’ (under the Immigration Act 2009).

2014

The stand-down period for permanent residents and Australian citizens will be extended to three years.
