Student's age

Provides an overview of changes to entitlements based on the age of the student and the year they came into effect.

Student Allowance changes

2003 

Access to student allowances for 16 and 17 year-olds who have completed year 13 or NCEA Level 3.

2009

The age limit for parental income testing reduced from 25 to 24 years of age.

The age range of additional dependent children in full-time study which allows for an adjustment in the parental income threshold reduced from 16 to 25 years of age to 16 to 23 years of age.

2014

The Student Allowance lifetime limit is reduced to 120 weeks for those aged 40 and over.

Student Allowance eligibility is removed for those aged 65 years and over.

Student Loan changes

1999

Parental consent required for students under 18 years to access Student Loans.

2013

People aged 55 years and over are no longer eligible to borrow the living costs and course-related costs components of the Student Loan.

2014

Access to the Student Loan Scheme for fees-free study for under 18 year olds adjusted.
